Mary Loughnan is my great grandmother.

She was born Mary D'Arcy in County Carlow about 1836. Nothing is known about her early life, although there have been suggestions of links to Gorey, a few miles up the road from Enniscorthy, but I have not been able to confirm this information.

Mary married James Loughnan some time before 1863, and they had at least two children, Margaret (c1865) and Josephine (1874). The gap between the two children suggests that there may be other, untraced, Loughnans.

James and Mary ran a provisions store and bakery at 3-4 Slaney Place, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford from before 1874.

Mary died in Enniscorthy on 19 May 1907 and is buried in the grounds of St Aidens Cathedral.

The Enniscorthy Guardian carried the following obituary in the edition dated Saturday 25 May 1907:

LOUGHNAN - on May 19th 1907 at her residence Slaney-place, Enniscorthy, Mary, beloved wife of James Loughnan. Funeral took place on Tuesday 22 inst. at Cathedral Cemetery after High Mass and Office. Fortified by the rites of the Catholic Church. R.I.P.
