The Muster Roll of the County of Donnagall 1630 - Barony
de Eneshone
One of the conditions placed on the Planters of Ulster was
that they should " .. have ready in their houses at all
times, a convenient store of arms, wherewith they may furnish
a competent number of men for their defence .. ".
The Muster Rolls were the names of the able-bodied men that
each landlord (in Inishowen, this was Lord Chichester) could
assemble to fight for his lands and for the Crown should the
need arise. The majority of men were likely, therefore, to
be of English or Scots origin rather than indigenous Irish.
The Roll of those available to fight was drawn up by William
Graham in, or around, the year 1630. The original is in the
British Library. The following information is taken from the
list published in the Donegal Annual in 1972.
However, I find it strange that very
few of these names appear, thirty years later, in the Poll
Tax Ordinance - a tax on people actually living in Inishowen.
I'll try and find out why, but if anyone can explain, please
E-MAIL me.
Please note that the Muster Roll covers all of Inishowen,
not just Moville, and that no further information about individuals
is available.
