Matt was born in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, on 16 July 1981. His parents are Ben Palmer and Andrea French.

He was educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS) in Wakefield, and Greenhead College, Huddersfield. Matt graduated from the University of Nottingham with a degree in Modern Languages, and currently works for Dresdner Kleinwort in the City of London.
