Bogside, Derry

My summer playground as a child, although it is a lot different now. The church in the centre is St. Eugene's Cathedral. To the left is a row of brightly coloured houses - Marlborough Terrace. Where they end, and just behind, is a road bending up towards Creggan - Beechwood Avenue. My grandmother lived in the first house in the Avenue (number 2), and my mother was born there.

My father was raised in the terraced streets just out of view to the right of the photo.

In the middle foreground is the Free Derry monument. A gable end of a house long since demolished, painted with the words "You are now entering Free Derry" - a reminder of the how the City has suffered these last thirty years.
